When clients are thinking about engaging in counselling, they have similar questions...
Question One: How do I know that counselling is right for me?
Over the many years I have been counselling, I have noticed there is a theme with the questions clients have before they come for their first session. It is a big decision to seek counselling and I have to say, it takes courage to make that first appointment. Many questions relate to 'how will I know' that counselling is right for me, or that the counsellor is the right person to help me at this time.
Counselling can be valuable for anyone who wants to improve their health. We know that taking care of you is important and that from time to time, professional support is what you need and that is OK.
Sometimes life can be overwhelming and having someone to talk with can provide immense emotional relief as counsellors listen without judgement and offer new perspectives. During the sessions, you will learn coping strategies to manage stress, anxiety, depression and other emotional challenges as counselling equips you with the tools to cope.
Taking the step to engage in counselling can be incredibly empowering and transformative - it is about investing in yourself and your well - being.
Question Two: How do I know I will get results?
Think of it this way - what make you think you will not get results?
It is perfectly normal to ask about this as you will be investing not only time but also money into your sessions. A few other things to think about:
Commitment and Openness - Being committed and open to the process is essential. The more you engage and actively participate, the more likely you are to see positive results.
Realistic Expectations: Please understand that change takes time. Setting realistic goals with your counsellor will ensure you are on the same page about what to expect. The problem/s didn't appear overnight and it is unreasonable to think that the solution will disappear over night, although you should start to see changes early in the process.
Consistency: Regular attendance is key - missing sessions or not following through with agreed upon actions will not get you results. You do need to take some responsibility for outcomes.
Finding the right Counsellor: A good rapport with your counsellor is critical as feeling comfortable and trusting your counsellor will enhance the effectiveness of your sessions. Don't hesitate to seek out someone else if you feel the fit is not right for you. You don't have to struggle on if you feel uncomfortable, AND of course, check they have the necessary qualifications, experiences and insurance that is needed to practice.
Question Three: Counselling can be expensive - why is that?
Generally , there are two options you can take to engage in counselling - non government/community organizations or with a private practitioner. Counselling with a respected counsellor can be costly due to several factors.
Expertise and Experience: Counsellors invest many years in education, trialing and gaining experience to become highly skills in their field.
Ongoing education: To stay updated with the latest practices, counsellors are required to participate in continual education and trialing each year and this training can be expensive.
Operational Costs: Running a private practice involves numerous expenses, including office rent, utilities, administrative support and professional regulations.
Personalised Care: Counsellors provide tailored, one-on-one sessions, which requires significant preparation and follow-up outside of the direct consultation.
Quality Assurance: Higher fees can be associated with higher quality care ensuring that clients receive the best possible support for their needs.
Question Four - Do I need a referral?
In Australia, you may engage in counselling without a referral and at Carer Care International, you are not required to provide a referral from your Medical Practitioner. Some clients prefer not to have a referral and pay the fee without seeking a rebate from Medicare.
Other clients, live outside of Australia and are not able to access Medicare -this is not a problem. We welcome you with or without a referral.
On the other hand, if you have a referral from your Medical Practitioner AND provide the referral several days before your session, you can claim from Medicare and receive nearly 50% fee rebate on each session.
You are welcome with a referral or without a referral. The sessions fee is the same and the high quality service is the same.
