Carer Care Inc. supports those who are at risk of emotional exhaustion from caring for others.
Let us share some of the projects to date and some more about the work we do and our purpose.
How it all began...
The idea of Carer Care Inc. was conceptualized in a small fishing village, Ductan Duitay, on the island of Negros in the Philippines.
Rhonda was visiting as part of a three month voluntary placement in the Philippines and was impacted by several common themes that emerged from conversations with those who live in such a remote and extreme environment.
People care for each other: Care was built into the social fabric of the culture: investment of time, money, food and resources was communal, rather than individualistic.
The goal of the whole community is valued more highly than than the good of the individual. In many ways, it is a beautiful set of values that enable people to survive, but underneath the surface, there is a high cost.
The problem though is not from the culture, but from lack of vital resources meaning those who had more resources often work harder to support those who have less. The majority are burdened by a lack of work, poor health and an inability to access adequate health care, lack of education, bad weather and poor housing.
As Rhonda explored these issues more deeply with community leaders, she discovered that they were at risk of exhaustion from working every hour that there was and from caring for families and communities and from their own health issues.
Stress and responsibility sometimes lay more heavily on the shoulders of those who cared most for their community as this may deplete their own resilience.
Rhonda went back to the villages of Decutan where, with the help of the youth group, she began to capture and consolidate some of these impressions in a banner made from cheap fabric and printed with stencils made by cutting shapes in potatoes. The theme became clear: those who lead and care need to recognise and prioritize their own needs, so that they can continue to benefit and all may thrive.
In this way, from the very meager resources of a subsistence community and yet from the deep richness of their human experiences, Carer Care Inc. began.
Similar themes in those who care in other settings...
Rhonda returned to her role in a hospital setting and as a private practitioner, observed similar themes.
Working with palliative care nurses, Rhonda noticed that they too were experiencing exhaustion and yet felt the need to keep caring...to keep providing...and placed their patients needs over and above their own needs.
Along with the Pastoral Care Worker in the hospital facility, a program called RSS was implemented where nurses and allied health staff could come for 30 minutes in their work time and have a period of reflection and support away from the demands of their role. The group was facilitated by Gayle the Pastoral Care Worker and Rhonda with the aim of supporting those that professionally care for others.
Carer Care Inc. is a not for profit organsiation, governed by a board of five professionals and meets the Australian ASIC Standards of a not for profit organisation.
Aims:
To proactively reduce the impact of emotional exhaustion
To serve those who care for others in a professional basis, or who live in remote locations whether they are geographically and financially disadvantaged, and yet have the same needs as other practitioners who able to access necessary support.
As we know, it is more effective to work proactively rather than waiting until clients present for treatment.
These aims are met through:
- Subsidised access to training, coaching and self care programs on a national and international basis.
- A 'scholarship' program funded by individuals and organizational donations, grant funding.
- Direct support from the 'good will' of individuals who see or have experienced the value of Carer Care Inc.
